Big news! A landmark supreme court case against Myriad, a biotech company that isolated and patentedthe BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene, has ruled against patents on human DNA. However, the patent on cDNA remains, since it is synthetic and falls under patent law.
BRCA genes have alleles related to breast cancer. Myriad owned the cDNA and thus the detection technique involved in identifying individuals at risk of the disease.
